Hire Purchase

How does hire purchase work?

This is a fixed term contract you make an agreed number of repayments over the working life of the asset with a nominal purchase fee at the end of the term to transfer title to the goods from SDC Trailers Ltd. to your business. Payment schedules can be varied to suit you, but generally involve a deposit followed by a series of regular instalments. With hire purchase you will own the asset at the end of the period, and effectively pay for it through the revenue it generates

Hire purchase options:

Fixed rate hire purchase

For accurate budgeting and financial planning, equal monthly or quarterly payments are made over an agreed time period. Charges are not affected by money market fluctuations as these are set at a fixed rate for the duration of the contract. You also have the option to build in an agreed balloon payment at the end of the contract this can be funded from the proceeds of the sale, if you choose to sell at the end of the term.

Fixed rate purchase offers various payments schemes as follows.

Accelerated payment plan

You pay fixed monthly instalments throughout each year of the contract, but the monthly amount is reduced each year. This means it is particularly suitable for assets where maintenance cost increase with age, as the reduced instalments will help offset these costs. Total charges under this plan can be lower than for a fixed rate agreement with uniform instalments.

Seasonal payment plan

This plan involves fixed charges throughout, but the payment pattern is designed to reflect significant seasonal variations in income with low seasonal payments are followed by six higher payments throughout the cource of the agreement.

Variable rate hire purchase

Uniform monthly or quarterly capital repayments are made during the contract period but interest is charged at a variable rate, linked to either finance house base rate or the Bank of Scotland base rate. Paid at the same intervals as the capital repayments, interest charges are calculated on the reducing capital balance so the overall payments will decrease as the agreement progresses. If base rate falls during the agreement period, total charges may be lower than that due under a fixed rate agreement. Additional capital repayments may be made at any time, and interest charges will then be reduced to reflect this.

Balanced payment plan

This plan combines the potential benefits of variable charges with the stability of fixed payments. A fixed margin and nominal base rate are agreed, and these are used to calculate the fixed payments, which remain constant throughout the term, irrespective of subsequent fluctuations in money cost costs. Regular statements show what charges would be on the prevailing base rate. At the end of the period any difference between the actual charges paid (based on the fixed amount agreed at the outset of the contract) and charges based on real rates reconciled. If interest rates have fallen during the contract period you will repay the Agreement early, and if they have risen, you will pay the balancing amount.
