SDC introduce new EN 12642 XL headboard on their Platform Trailer Range

The UK and Ireland’s leading semi-trailer manufacturer, SDC Trailers, has introduced a new multi-functional headboard on their Platform trailer range with an innovative design with a host of features for improved operation, safety and utilization. Manufactured in high tensile steel, the EN 12642 XL headboard will be fitted as standard across SDC’s platform range for the construction, oil, timber and steel transport industries.

The trailer headboard plays a vital function during transport; forming an essential part of the load restraint and acting as a back up system to protect the driver. Developed by SDC’s in-house team of highly skilled engineers, the multi-functional headboard features an internal flush face for ease of loading, rounded top corners for cover sheets, a new coupling box location and heavy-duty nose cone assembly for strength and trailer protection when coupling. The design has been load certified by independent body, TÜV-NORD, to achieve EN 12642 XL accreditation to a payload of 29,000kgs.

Enda Cushnahan, SDC’s Trailers CEO, said: “Safety is paramount at SDC and our engineers are continually looking for ways to enhance our product offering in line with new features and industry requirements. The roll out of our new Platform headboard, is example of the forward-thinking, high quality solutions that customers can expect from an SDC, advancing on trailer safety and ease of operation.”

Renowned for their longevity, SDC’s Platform trailer range is made up of standard, extendable and step-frame models as well as bespoke designs, based on the operator’s requirements. SDC work with the customer to specify everything from the overall trailer length, to spacing of pin sockets, floor, dropsides, storage, load restraint and rear end options.

When the specification is agreed, SDC’s team of engineers will develop a 3D model utilising the latest modelling software and conduct finite element analysis on the 3D model, to ensure the design build meets the quality standard. The designs are enhanced to relieve stress on critical parts of the trailer, extending its working life for a highly durable, flawless finish.

Throughout their 40 years of trailer manufacturing, SDC has developed a number of ‘industry first’ trailer solutions, setting the industry standard for others to follow. They have manufactured over 150,000 semi-trailers at their UK and Ireland production facilities, from Platform, Skeletal and Curtainside, to Boxvan, Machine Carrier and Drawbar trailers.
