You are here: Home Showcase SDC LONGER LENGTH TRAILERS

SDC Trailers, the UK’s largest trailer manufacturer, has backed today’s announcement by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Mike Penning MP, that a public consultation is launched to consider extending the maximum length of semi-trailers. Extended trailers would allow operators to carry higher volumes of goods but still meet the current regulations with regard to maximum permitted weights and turning circles. Legislation permitting longer trailers would deliver significant environmental benefits with less vehicles on the UK road network and the associated reductions in fuel usage and carbon emissions.

SDC has always been at the leading edge of trailer technology and has already worked closely with some of its customers, such as Stobart Group, to develop prototype vehicles. It has already manufactured trailers one metre and two metres longer than the current maximum length of 13.6 metres and equipped them with steering axles. It has also undertaken significant testing and development to ensure the vehicles meet required turning circle regulations and help reduce wear and tear on the road network.

SDC continues to drive trailer innovation and efficiencies in the logistics industry. In September last year it became the first UK trailer manufacturer to secure European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval.

Mark Cuskeran, SDC Trailers Managing Director, said: "This is great news for the industry as a whole and also for UK trailer manufacturers. Operators will also welcome the decision as it’s an opportunity for some of them to operate more efficiently and, of course, reduce fuel bills and carbon emissions. We’ve already manufactured and tested some prototypes and I believe that experience will help put SDC in a strong position to meet any demand for new longer trailers once the results of the consultation become apparent.”
